About a month and a half ago we went outside to play on the back grass and there were hundreds.. No, more like thousands of caterpillars crawling everywhere. It was pretty gross and it made feel like things were crawling all over me. Actually just writing this post makes me feel that way! Jackson on the other hand loved them. He would try and run outside anytime he could and see them. At first he was a little nervous of them but after a couple of days he was grabbing them by the fist full of the trees. Yes, you read that right fist fulls. Ross and I before we let Jackson touch them read online what they were and if they were poisonous or not. They were not poisonous and they were caterpillars that turned into an ugly moth lol The internet said that they came in huge groups right before they were going to make their cocoons. They weren't joking when they said huge groups. They were everywhere crawling on the building, in the trees, on the road and in the grass. For the few weeks they were here Jackson alway had his eyes out for them. We would be on a walk and he would start yelling and pointing to the ground and sure enough there was a caterpillar crossing the road!
One night I was telling Ross that we should catch some and have them turn into ugly moths. Ross just laughed because he didn't think we could do it and they would die inside our house. But I remember growing up we would do this almost every year and it WORKED! So the next day we went out with Jackson and picked four caterpillars and put them into our cage. After a week or so we Ross thought he was right and they were all dead, to be honest I thought they were to, it looked like they had eaten a hole though two of them. But then we saw this weird looking spider like web in the bottom of the cage. Turns out these moths don't hang from the branch like the butterflies do back in Utah. I guess they shed their top layer, like a snake, and make this web cocoon around them. (side note** This made me happy because last year I saw the cocoons and thought they were spiders nest and millions of littler spiders were going to come out and get me. I slept a lot easier this year knowing they were caterpillars) Anyway, I think after that Ross check the cage every day haha He was more excited about it then any of us. He had never done this before. After a few more weeks there popped out a ugly brown moths but we were happy to have them.
I have to tell you quickly of when they came out.. So we were over at our friends house playing games and Jackson had had enough so Ross was nice enough to take Jackson home and put him to bed and let me finish the game. I guess he put in a move to watch after Jackson was asleep and it was at a scary part when our lovely moth decided to come out. Ross said it was all quiet and all of a sudden he hears all this banging around up on our bookshelf haha I guess is scared him pretty good.
Jackson loving the caterpillar
What the ugly things looked like at first
One of the smaller groups on a tree
Catching the caterpillars with Oma on skype to see
The spider like cocoon
I thought the hole they made to come out looked pretty cool
The finished product! Ugly brown moths
The Caterpillar and cocoons would be cool but the moths would put Uncle Don into another dimension!! He is terrified, absolutely terrified of moths!!!
ReplyDeletethat is cool! We currently have a lot of little green caterpillars all over. maybe we'll have to give this a try. They end up in my house anyway, may as well enjoy them
ReplyDeleteHaha you kill me. I love how you call them ugly brown mouths and stupid things, exactly how I would talk! No wonder we get along so well : ) and holy crap all those on that tree....freaking creepy!
